About
Ayah is a mixed media artist whose work centers the trials and triumphs of womanhood. Many of her visual narratives celebrate female archetypes, examine both masculine and feminine energy, and explore the nuanced depths of the human condition and range of emotion.
Her featureless abstracted figures, and the stories they tell, draw from Caribbean, Islamic, and Cubist influences. Faces are intentionally left blank to allow the viewer to imagine themselves reflected in the work. The Harlem Renaissance, Black Arts Movement, music, film, literature, and spiritual ideas also serve as point of inspiration. Most of her work incorporates found objects, collage, and brightly colored acrylic paint. Ayah is currently exploring chromotherapy - the use of vivid color to positively affect moods and emotions, and to promote healing.
Ayah holds a Bachelor of Architecture degree from Howard University, and has experience in the fields of interior design and fashion. Ayah’s lived experiences at the intersectionality of a Jamaican immigrant, a black woman, a convert to Islam, and a single mother of five, shape the stories she tells through her art. Her work is often deeply personal, and shows reverence for the universal forces that connect us all.
